Fortune Cookie Love

Now a days it’s virtually impossible to find a fortune cookie that actually has a fortune inside.  The majority of the time, they are just poorly written aphorisms.

I love eating Asian cuisine, and I look forward to reading my “fortune” at the end of every meal.  Within the last year however, I may have opened around 40 fortune cookies, and out of those, only TWO were actual fortunes.  I’m one of those people who believe everything happens for a reason, but I’ll let you decide whether or not this is fate or just a coincidence.

The first actual fortune I received was on Thursday, May 19th of this year.  I was on my lunch break with one of my fellow managers, while working for Mighty Fine Burgers in South Austin. I just finished some Szechwan garlic chicken from Fire Bowl, my favorite dish, and it came time to see what the future would bring.  Little did I know this started a chain of events that literally changed my life.

Yes, it might seem vague to some, but at the time it was very relevant to my situation. I had been working for Mighty Fine for a little over 4 years, so this news came as a forewarning that I couldn’t take lightly.  On Friday May 27th, 1 week after reading this fortune, I was informed that I would no longer be working for Mighty Fine Burgers.

So now what? I did as anyone would do, I started my job hunt. For the better part of 5 months I searched and searched. I started to wonder when the “for the better” part was going to happen.  But this little piece of paper kept me motivated and optimistic.

On November 12, 2011 I received my second fortune cookie.

Fortune Cookie Love Part 2

This one was read after a tasty dinner at PF Chang’s in the Arboretum. This sounds pretty promising, don’t you think?

Here’s where it all comes together.

On November 17th 2011, just 5 days after reading the second fortune, I visited the Travis County Clerk’s office to file an Assumed Name for my new business… KB Web Branding.  Less than a month later I launched my website and within that first week, I already had 8 partners ready to start using my services.

And there it was, the “change for the better.”  Yet it was right in front of me the entire time.  I’ve always loved graphic design & making websites, and I have learned from my previous employer how to deliver world class customer service.  Combining those concepts into a successful business plan has landed me my dream job, and I’m loving every minute of it.

So next time you read your fortune cookie, don’t just take it with a grain of salt!
